Tackling a new garden or revamping an old one can
be intimidating and confusing

There are major issues to consider: soil type, level variations, climate, aspect – and of course budget.  By approaching a garden designer you can obtain a clear plan that will make sense of your garden.  I can offer a service that incorporates the initial garden design concept, overseeing the construction, producing a planting plan and organising the planting.  This will ensure that your garden thrives in its environment whilst saving you the aggravation of costly mistakes.

If your garden is a completely blank canvas, or you simply wish to tackle that awkward dry shade area at the bottom of the garden, please browse this website and contact me to arrange a free initial consultation.  I am happy to discuss garden design projects not only around Dorchester but also throughout Dorset and the southern counties.

Initial Consultation

The first step is for you to show me your garden and let me know what you have in mind.

What do you want from your garden?
A family garden?
A wow factor?
A quiet retreat?
A haven for wildlife?

What plant effects do you enjoy?
Traditional cottage garden?
Dramatic foliage?
A riot of colour?
Minimalist greens?

It is very important that I gain a clear picture of your likes and dislikes at this stage - I will have a questionnaire for us to go through together which will help this process. We will also discuss what features should be incorporated into the design (paved area, water feature, pergola etc) and what sort of budget you have in mind.

The Process

Once I have established your requirements I will send you a letter of engagement confirming the brief, detailing the design process and setting out the fee structure. If you are happy we can proceed.

I will arrange to carry out a site analysis and survey of your garden, take soil samples, photographs and, if necessary, do a level survey. I will then have a detailed plan of the area to be designed as well as a note of all plants and features to be retained, your garden’s soil characteristics (pH, structure etc) and the topography and climate of your garden. With this information I can start designing.

When the design is ready we will meet up again so that I can talk it through with you and any possible amendments can be addressed at this stage.

The Plants

A planting plan, if required, can be developed and presented to you, either with the design or at a later stage during construction. Plants included in the plan will be suitable for your soil type and for the aspect and climate of your garden.

I can source the plants for you, arrange for their delivery and check their quality. I am also happy to arrange the planting and can produce a plant care schedule for you to follow if required.

Building Your Garden

Assuming you wish to proceed with your new garden, I can help you obtain quotations from two or three contractors, or you may wish to organize the construction yourself. If required, I can be involved in regular site visits during construction to ensure the garden is being built to my design and to your satisfaction.
